Alan Estate exists because administering a deceased estate in Australia is harder than it needs to be, and predictably so.

The people who founded it have done the job. Not as advisers, as executors: the person holding the folder, ringing institutions, working out that superannuation follows different rules from the will, and discovering months in that a document nobody had looked at in years determined who received the largest asset in the estate.

What stayed with us afterwards was how predictable the difficulty was. Almost every estate involves the same forty or so tasks, in roughly the same order, with the same traps, and no one hands you the list.

So we wrote the list, and made it free. Around it we are building two tools: a personalised plan and drafted correspondence for executors, and a simple, current record for people who would rather their own family never had to search.

What we believe

• Sequence is the product. Knowing that Services Australia is a 28-day matter and probate is a two-month one changes how a family copes with the whole thing.
• Superannuation is where Australian estates come unstuck. For most people over sixty it is the largest asset, it does not pass under the will, and the rules for self-managed funds are unforgiving about timing.
• Say what we are. This is general information, sourced to the ATO, the courts and the state registries. It is not legal advice. Where a matter needs a solicitor or an SMSF specialist, we say so plainly.
• Grieving people are not a funnel. The guide has no paywall and no sign-up. Tell us if you want to hear from us. Otherwise take what is useful and go.

Where we are

Early, and honest about it. The guide on this site is live and free. The products are in development, beginning in Victoria, because probate and land title rules differ by state and we would rather be right in one place than approximate in eight.
